Tooth colored fillings and Bonding

The Purpose of a Filling

A tooth is covered with a layer of enamel, the hardest material in the human body. However, enamel is not impervious.

Oral bacteria feast on sugars and starches in bits of food debris. As these organisms eat, they produce acids that get trapped in pits and crevices in the tooth. This eventually erodes the enamel until it forms a hole. This allows bacteria to invade into the next layer, which is softer and allows the decay to quickly spread deeper into the tooth.

A filling is placed into a prepared tooth to halt the progress of decay, and to restore strength and function. It is the most common cosmetic and restorative dental procedure.

At South Central Dentistry we only use esthetic composite resin, silver mercury fillings are not offered

Crowns and Veneers

The Procedure

A dental crown requires two visits. First, the damaged structure is removed and the tooth is built up and shaped. Impressions of your mouth are sent to a dental laboratory, along with detailed information on shading. While the lab fabricates the crown, your tooth is protected with an interim restoration.

You return in a few weeks to have the temporary restoration removed and your beautiful new crown cemented into place. Occasionally, no anesthetic is needed for this appointment. The crown receives a final polish, and your chewing function and smile appeal are restored.

While a crown cannot get a cavity, natural tooth structure beneath it can develop decay. It is important to brush with a bit of extra attention at the margin (where the crown meets gum tissue), and floss before bedtime to avoid risk of decay or gum disease. If you are a bruxer – you clench or grind excessively during sleep – the Dr. Caouette will talk with you about wearing a night guard to protect your crown and teeth. With good oral hygiene your crown should last many years.

Dental Crowns

A crown is a cap bonded over a prepared tooth. Crowns may be made of various metals, but ceramic or porcelain are the most popular choice for their natural appearance.

A crown may be used to;

  • cosmetically improve a poorly-shaped or badly discolored tooth.
  • restore a large area of breakage or decay.
  • provide strength and protection for a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
  • restore a dental implant.
  • anchor a bridge.

Dental Veneers

These layers of lustrous porcelain are about as thick as a contact lens. Veneers are precisely designed to fit over the front surfaces of teeth that show when you smile, to disguise flaws such as:

  • Bumps and pits in enamel.
  • Chips and cracks.
  • Teeth with an unusual shape.
  • Teeth that look too long, too short, or show wear.
  • Spacing issues.
  • Minor misalignment.
  • Stubborn discolouration.

The Procedure

Dr. Caouette can correct these imperfections in just two visits. At the initial appointment, teeth are prepared – a tiny amount of surface enamel is removed to allow veneers to fit snugly and look natural. the teeth are then scanned to create a precise digital 3D model which is uploaded to our lab with exact instructions on colour, shading and contour. You return in about two weeks to have the veneers fitted, cemented in place, and polished to a beautiful shine.

Dr. Caouette and his team will provide instructions on caring for your new smile at home. It is important to carefully brush and floss your teeth.  We may also suggest wearing a night guard to extend the life of your veneers.
