Edmonton dentist discusses how to stop wisdom tooth pain and get lasting relief
Occasionally, wisdom teeth can cause painful problems. Symptoms arise when they don’t develop or erupt through tissues properly.
HOW TO STOP WISDOM TOOTH PAIN
A tooth that partially erupts through the gums or doesn’t erupt through at all can give rise to the following symptoms:
- Localised pain and swelling
- Jaw stiffness
- Irritation to the tongue or palate
Even properly-developing teeth can cause transient pain as they eruptthrough the gums. This sensation generally subsides after they fully erupt. Keeping sites clean may ease short-term soreness and gum pain. A dental evaluation is necessary to confirm if the pain is harmless (or otherwise).
WISDOM TOOTH INFECTION
Symptoms of dental infections surrounding wisdom teeth may come and go. The underlying problem won’t subside for good without professional intervention. The pain of partly- or fully-impacted molars persists, because these teeth are blocked from progressing, or erupting through tissues. Untreated, you’re at risk of recurrent infections, muscle spasms, and swelling.
Wisdom teeth that don’t develop properly may become infected, because the flap that forms over them tends to trap food and bacteria. To avoid serious complications, call Dr. Caouette at the first sign of trouble.
Wisdom tooth infection may be treated with antibiotics before moving forward with extraction. Meanwhile, a cold compress, warm salt water rinses, and OTC medication can help manage pain. These steps will be included in Dr. Caouette’s thorough post-extraction instructions.
PREVENT PAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE!
During recall appointments, South Central Dentistry monitors wisdom teeth growth. You may be in the lucky minority and never have problems, but in an estimated 85 percent of cases, wisdom teeth must be removed. Generally the older you are, the more challenging extractions may be and the greater the risk of developing complications.
Additionally, at our office the cost of wisdom tooth extraction doesn’t have to be a barrier to a healthy mouth and body. Call us to discuss options for payment and treatment.
